It’s taken eight years but now we’re coming full circle. Electronic Arts has officially announced that it’s coming back to Steam, starting with the arrival of Star Wars: Jedi – Fallen Order on November 15th.
As part of a new partnership between EA and Valve, EA’s games will now launch on both Steam and Origin. EA’s Origin Access subscription service will also become available on Steam, beginning in Spring 2020. Origin Access includes a growing collection of EA games which can be accessed through a single monthly subscription service and is the first such subscription package to be available through Steam.
While EA will be starting with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the likes of Battlefield V, FIFA 20, Apex Legends, and The Sims 4 will all be coming to Steam during the coming months.
“This is the start of an exciting partnership with Valve that will see us innovating for PC players around the world,” said Andrew Wilson, CEO of Electronic Arts. “Through our subscription, great games and more, we’re excited to bring players in the Steam and Origin communities together with access to the best games, whenever and wherever they want to play.”
“This is a good day for gamers,” said Valve’s Gabe Newell. “We’re excited to partner with EA to not only bring their great games and subscription service to Steam, but also to open up our communities to each other in an unprecedented way that will benefit players and developers around the world.”
From the looks of things, EA games on Steam will behave exactly the same as Ubisoft titles currently do. Users can buy the game on Steam, it will add it their Steam library, and then boot it through both Steam and a layer of the Origin client.
It’s a fascinating turnaround no doubt spurred on by the flurry of game clients available these days. It’s now big news, and a selling point, to publish games on Steam, rather than alternatives such as the Epic Games Store. Plenty have gamers have reached a breaking point and it’s an easy win for EA to curry some favour during what’s been a troubling period for the publishing giant. No doubt some money probably changed hands here, and EA likely cut a very sweet deal, although it’s certainly be interesting to see whether there’s the same hang-wringing we see whenever Epic inks a deal with a publisher…
In addition to the big news, EA also dropped a launch trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. It’s looking really rather tasty indeed and shows plenty of new locations along with a handful of huge boss fights.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order comes to PC (Origin and Steam), PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on November 15th.
