First Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Super benchmark leaks ahead of expected launch today

That oft-reliable source for graphics cards leaks has graced us with another gift. Yep, it’s none other than Final Fantasy XV’s official benchmark tool, which features performance numbers from Nvidia’s imminent GeForce RTX 2080 Super graphics card.

This tells us the GeForce RTX 2080 Super is definitely in reviewers’ hands already ahead of an expected official launch later today. Utilising the same Turing GPU architecture as the rest of the RTX series,  the RTX 2080 Super is heading market priced at $699. It’s the same price tag as the base RTX 2080’s launch price.

Onto the performance then. We’ve now got our first peek at how the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Super stacks up version the RTX 2080 it’s replacing. The Final Fantasy XV results are from 1440p screen resolution benchmarks at the High Quality graphics preset. Nvidia’s RTX 20880 Super scores 8663 in the FFXV benchmark, equivalent to an average of 86.6 frames per second.

As for how this stacks up against its competition, this makes the RTX 2080 Super around 7.5% faster than an RTX 2080 and just 2% slower than an Nvidia Titan V. Considering the Nvidia Titan V launched just 18 months ago with a $3000 price tag, that’s not bad at all. In comparison to the outgoing RTX 2080 it’s not exactly an earth-shattering improvement but it is 7.5% higher FPS for the same price tag.

Price Average FPS Cost Per Frame
RTX 2080 Ti $999 99.2 $10.07
RTX 2080 Super $699 86.6 $8.07
RTX 2080 $699 80.5 $8.68

If you’re fortunate enough to be rocking a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti (or two), your silicon throne is still intact. The GeForce RTX 2080 Super comes up well short of the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, scoring frame rates 14.5% slow than Team Green’s flagship gaming GPU.

Overall, the GeForce RTX 2080 Super is shaping up to be the most tepid of the Super upgrades, offering modest performance gains that are hardly going to have vanilla RTX 2080 owners sobbing into their RGB tissues. Still, it’s more power for the same price, which in the short term helps to elevate Nvidia a fair whack ahead of AMD’s best efforts.
