In addition to the first gameplay from Half-Life: Alyx, Valve has also revealed that the Source 2 SDK (Software Development Kit) will ship with the virtual reality title.
The official Steam store page for Half-Life: Alyx confirms that community-built environments and mods will be possible with the Source 2 tools. Players can use an updated version of Hammer, the current level editing tool for Source games, in order to build custom levels and campaigns for HL: Alyx. Who knows, folks may even end up getting a whole lot more wild; Counter-Strike began as a community mod for the original Half-Life.
“A set of Source 2 tools for building new environments will ship with the game,” confirms Valve, “enabling any player to build and contribute new environments for the community to enjoy. Hammer, Valve’s level authoring tool, has been updated with all of the game’s virtual reality gameplay tools and components.”
Forking out upwards of £900 for the full Valve Index and Half-Life: Alyx experience is going to be difficult to stomach, no doubt about it, but at least players can look forward to a whole lot more than a 15-hour campaign once the community starts tinkering with it. Custom maps are the obvious thing, but the sky’s the limit really once modders get involved.
Based on what we’ve seen of Half-Life: Alyx, the Source 2 engine is looking extremely capable as well. There’s a level of visual fidelity which is unheard of in the VR space and the exciting potential for the VR community to tap into some fresh ideas.
Half-Life: Alyx and the Source 2 SDK are both out on Steam in March 2020.
